Who Do You Play For?
How is your summer work out going?

Not everyone gets to play for Medina. Many students around Northeast Ohio wished they could play for us because, well...their school's team just doesn't compete.

I recently watched "The Miracle" on the tube and was reminded about that spectacular victory Team USA had over the Russians in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.

I was a Junior in High School and remember sitting glued to the TV for every second of the game, yelling, screaming, jumping and high fiving my Mom and Dad right beside me. What a memory!

As I watched the movie from my hotel room in Syracuse - (we were at the Syracuse Shoot-Out with Nate's travel team) - I found myself glued to the set again waiting for the final seconds to tick off to hear the famous last few comments by sportscaster All Michaels,

"Eleven seconds, you've got ten seconds, the countdown going on right now! Morrow, up to Silk. Five seconds left in the game. Do you believe in miracles?...YES!"

A classic line which has gone down in sports history.

After watching the movie (3rd or 4th time) there was something that impacted me more than the famous "miracle" comment. The aspect of the movie which impacted me most was the director's depiction of the team's dedication of working in the months leading up to the exhibitions and group play prior to the medal round. Coach Herb Brooks (portrayed by Kurt Russell in the movie) was and qualifying rounds for the Olympics.

Brooks, known for his uncanny way of motivating players, pushed his players to go beyond themselves.

Now here is a question for you if you are a Medina lacrosse player. If you were to stop and evaluate the effort you have made in at this point in the summer (mid-July) what grade would you give yourself? Be honest.

Are you hitting the weights? Playing wall ball? Playing in a summer league? Shooting at goals? Making every Thursday night pick up game at the school? Or are you able to make up some excuse every time an opportunity comes long?

Now is the time when individuals get better at the sport of lacrosse. The best teams next Spring will be successful because of the work they put in this week, next week and next month.

Don't waste the opportunity. Don't let Medina lacrosse sink to a mediocre level. Get out and work on your fundamentals.

Pick up games take place on Thursday Nights from 6 to 8 PM for a Captain led pick up game. Alumni are encouraged to attend. Open Lacrosse nights are open to everyone expecting to make the team next Spring.

2011 Medina Bees at Colonial Cup
Show Steady Improvement Throughout the Day

Picture
The 2011 Medina Bees traveled to Robert Morris University Thursday to compete in the Elite Division of the Colonial Cup tournament.

Opening the day's games with the top opponent in the tournament, the new Bees got a good look at the level required to be a contender for next year. Playing the Pittsburgh U-19 Elite team, the Bees found themselves down early, struggling to keep up with the older, stronger Pittsburgh team. The Bees lost the first game 15-2 but all was not for loss as the game served as a good barometer for the young Bees to measure their improvement throughout the day.

The second game pitted the Bees against the RMU grey team in the impressive Joe Walton Stadium. The Bees took their play up a few notches as they began moving the ball well on offense. The defense improved their communication with each other and the long poles made good adjustments with their slides and one-on-one defense.

Down 4-1 early in the first half, the Bees clawed and scrapped to eventually went up 8-7 with less than five minutes to play in the game. RMU tied the score late in the game to force a sudden victory overtime session. The Bees had one scoring opportunity in the OT session but a turnover gave RMU grey the only opportunity it needed to score on the ensuing possession to take a 9-8 victory.

After an exceptional lunch spread put on by the rockin' Medina Lax Moms (and a couple Dads), the boys were ready to take on their thrid opponent of the day, the Haymakers from Columbus, Ohio.

Winning multiple face-offs and taking advantage of extended possessions, the Bees were able to string together a few "Medina Bees Scoring Runs" and take the Haymakers out of their game. The 2011 Medina Bees put on a great showing in game 3, defeating the Columbus team 13-7. Cole Giordan (Heeeeyyyyyy Cole) was in goal against the Haymakers, making 7 saves while only allowing 7 goals. Mitch Doraty, playing crease attack at the end of the game scored the most emphatic goal of the day with a shot that brought the sideline to their feet.

Congrats 2011 Bees! You are off to a great start! Have a great few days off and we'll see you next week at the Medina Lacrosse All Star Camp!
